Kyocera Document Solutions Inc. (President: Takashi Nagai) is pleased to announce that its project titled "Material Reduction in Packaging of 100kg-Class Precision Equipment Using Cup-Shaped Cushioning Material" has been awarded the Technical Packaging Award at the 2025 Japan Packaging Contest, hosted by the Japan Packaging Technology Association. This award marks the Company's 18th recognition at this contest.
Traditionally, when transporting our multifunction devices and printers, a large amount of laminated corrugated cardboard*1 was required as cushioning material to protect the products from impact. While corrugated cardboard offers excellent strength and load-bearing capacity when used as a box, its cushioning performance is relatively low, necessitating the use of substantial quantities to ensure adequate product protection. In response, the Company has replaced laminated corrugated cardboard with pulp-molded*2 materials and developed three variations of cup-shaped cushioning materials.
These cup-shaped cushioning materials feature a hollow cup design that provides superior shock absorption compared to conventional laminated corrugated cardboard. Additionally, the materials are made from highly biodegradable*3 pulp mold, which facilitates recycling and reduces environmental impact.
Through this development, the optimal arrangement of three cushioning variations with differing shock absorption and shapes has enabled a 72% reduction in cushioning material usage per multifunction device.
Currently, these cushioning materials are primarily used for multifunction devices; however, the Company plans to expand their application to a wide range of products of various sizes in the future. All packaging materials used for our products are developed and designed in-house, and our technological expertise is highly regarded both domestically and internationally. We will continue to actively pursue packaging material development to lead the packaging industry.
*1 Special corrugated cardboard manufactured by bonding multiple corrugated sheets, known for its strength and durability.
*2 Paper molded products made by mixing recycled paper or wood pulp with water, then shaping and drying in molds.
*3 A property of materials that are decomposed by microorganisms at the molecular level, ultimately converting into carbon dioxide and water, thereby returning to the natural environment.
