Kyocera Won the Category Award at the 2026 Japan Packaging Contest Paper-Based Packaging for Colour A3 MFPs

Kyocera Document Solutions Inc. (President: Takashi Nagai) is pleased to announce that its “User-Friendly Paper-Based Packaging for Large Colour A3 Multifunction Products (MFPs)” has received a Category Award at the 2026 Japan Packaging Contest, organised by the Japan Packaging Institute.

The Japan Packaging Contest recognises outstanding packaging solutions of the year, evaluating a wide range of aspects from design to logistics. With this latest achievement, the Company has now received a total of 23 awards in this prestigious competition.

The award-winning packaging was developed for large colour A3 MFPs and successfully balances ease of unpacking, resource conservation, and stable transportation quality. The design also takes into consideration the practical requirements of unpacking, collection, and waste-sorting operations at customer sites.

Key features of the packaging include:

  • An unpacking ramp utilising packaging components

  • A pallet that can be disassembled without tools

  • Fully paper-based cushioning materials enabled by an integrated cushioning structure

  • A side-opening package design that reduces the height required for unpacking

Kyocera Document Solutions has independently developed and designed packaging materials for products such as multifunction printers and printers. Going forward, the Company will continue to develop packaging technologies that reduce the burden of unpacking, collection, and waste-sorting operations while conserving resources and ensuring the transportation quality necessary to deliver products safely to customers.


1. Unpacking Ramp Utilising Packaging Components

Previously, a dedicated ramp component was included with the package. In the new design, the upper cushioning material serves as a ramp support stand, while part of the pallet is used as the ramp board. This eliminates the need for dedicated ramp components, reducing packaging weight by 3.5 kg. In addition, the packaging volume has been reduced by 16%.

2. Tool-Free Pallet for Easy Material Separation

For collection and waste sorting, the pallet features a structure that allows wood and corrugated cardboard components to be manually separated and removed. This eliminates the need for the screwdriver-based removal of wood screws that was previously required. As a result, sorting work time has been reduced by 87%.

3. Adoption of Fully Paper-Based Cushioning Materials Through an Integrated Cushioning Structure

Conventional paper-based cushioning materials presented challenges due to their limited resilience, which could lead to misalignment or detachment between the product and the cushioning material.

The new packaging overcomes these issues by integrating the product and packaging structure, thereby stabilising transportation quality.

As a result, paper-based cushioning made from corrugated cardboard has been successfully adopted even in regions with demanding transportation conditions, where plastic cushioning materials made from expanded polyethylene (PE) had previously been required.

4. Reduced Unpacking Height Through a Side-Opening Package Design


Conventional top-opening packaging required approximately 2.7 meters of vertical clearance for unpacking. The new design enables side-opening, allowing unpacking in spaces with only 1.6 meters of height clearance.

This makes it easier for a single person to unpack the product, even in indoor environments with low ceilings.
